Although it can turn into an emergency, wisdom tooth removal is a pretty straightforward procedure.
First, the dentist may need to take some X-rays of your mouth to understand the position of your wisdom teeth and plan the best way to remove them.
The dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area, so you won't feel anything. If you are very anxious, you can talk to your dentist about sedation options too, like laughing gas.
Once the anesthesia kicks in, the dentist will make an incision in your gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone. If necessary, they'll remove the bone that's blocking access to the tooth root. The tooth may be divided into sections to make it easier to remove. Once the tooth has been removed, the oral surgeon will clean the site to remove any debris from the tooth or bone and then close the wound.
The dentist will then place gauze over the tooth extraction site to control bleeding and help with the formation of the blood clot.
