What to Expect After Implant Surgery

It's normal to experience some level of pain around the implant surgery site. Swelling and bruising are also common side effects of the procedure. You can use OTC pain medication and cold compresses to alleviate some of your discomfort.

Minor bleeding from the implant site is also normal. Your Houston dentist will tell you how to deal with it if it occurs.

As the anesthesia starts to wear off, you may notice another stranger sensation, like a tightness in your mouth. It may almost feel as if your implant is shifting. This is also normal and the sensation usually disappears as you become accustomed to the implant.

Remember, if you experience any severe pain, significant bleeding, or other concerning symptoms, you should immediately get in touch with your dentist.

What Can I Eat After Dental Implant Surgery?

As we said, your diet can influence how fast you will recover after the implant surgery. Hard, crunchy, or chewy foods can affect the implant site, increasing the risks of infection and failure. That's why it's best to stick to soft and easy-to-chew foods. Here are some suggestions:

  • Smoothies: Mix fruits with yogurt or protein powder to make a more nutritious meal.
  • Soups and broths: A warm and comforting soup can help you feel better. Just be sure not to eat it while it's hot as it can irritate the surgical area.
  • Yogurt: This is not only easy to eat but also nutritious.
  • Mashed Potatoes: This is another comforting and satiating food.
  • Scrambled Eggs: These are soft and a good source of protein.
  • Pudding and Applesauce: If you are craving something delicious, then one of these foods can satisfy your sweet tooth.
  • Soft Fruits: Bananas and avocados are some healthy and delicious options that don't require much chewing.
  • Cheese: Soft cheese can be a good source of calcium and protein.
  • Oatmeal or Porridge: These are gentle on your mouth and filling.

Remember to avoid hard, sticky, and overly spicy foods as they can irritate the surgical area. It's also a good idea to avoid drinking with a straw for the first few days, as the sucking action can dislodge the blood clot forming on the surgery site and lead to a painful condition known as a dry socket.
