Dental Implants and the Removal of Impacted Teeth

Today, due to advances in technology and medical knowledge, we have more effective methods for placing dental implants and removing impacted teeth. This has helped improve healing time and allowed us to provide these treatments more comfortably.

There are certain conditions wherein oral surgery is necessary. These are:
  • Impacted Teeth – third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth, normally erupt at 18 years old and above. Sometimes these teeth will partially erupt, or worse, become impacted due to lack of space in the jaw. An impacted tooth is very hard to clean and prone to infection. Any infection to these teeth may lead to infection of neighboring teeth and tissues. Thus, to prevent this, a surgical removal of the teeth is indicated.
  • Tooth loss – loss of a tooth or more can be replaced by dental implants. Surgery involves implanting root substitutes where the artificial teeth will be attached.
  • Unequal jaw growth – corrected by moving the jaw into a balanced position to restore its normal function.
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder – surgery is required for advanced cases of TMJ disorder.
  • Repair of Facial Injury – this will fix fractured or broken jaws and facial bones.
  • Removal of lesion and for biopsy use – oral surgeon will remove any abnormal growth of the tissue and send it to laboratory for testing and evaluation.
  • Cleft lip/palate repair – a common birth defects which can be corrected through surgery.
  • Snoring – this is a common sleep disorder caused by obstruction of the upper airway. This is treated with surgery called somnoplasty.
  • Dental Implants – a great way to restore chewing function to a patient with a missing tooth or teeth. The implant restorations that sit on top of the dental implant are made to look very realistic. The size and shape of your original tooth is matched, as well as the color of your surrounding teeth is noted, so your new tooth looks natural. Another option for denture patients is to get implant dentures. These hold the denture firmly in place and improve the denture wearing experience. Ask us about Implant Dentures.
